Linear versus nonlinear functions (algebra/8th grade math)

Linear functions have these characteristics:

  • the rate of change is constant;
  • the graph of the function is a line;
  • the equation is of the form y = mx + b.

We use these characteristics to check whether the three example functions in the video are linear or not.
