First, we review what is a proportional relationship, and three ways you can tell that two quantities are in such a relationship. Another term people use is that the quantities are in direct variation. Then we go through some exercises, such as this one: In a direct variation, when x is 12, y is 10. What is the equation for this relationship?
In another exercise, we have a graph showing the distance a car has covered over time. Our task is to find its speed, the unit rate, and slope; and then write an equation for the graph.
