Age and coin word problems (8th grade math/algebra 1)

See an example of a typical age-related algebra word problem, and another that uses coins. Can you solve them before I show how?

The age problem is this: Kathy says, "In two years, I will be 1.5 times as old as I was 18 years ago. How old am I?"

The coin problem is this:
Anthony has a bunch of dimes in his piggy bank, twice as many nickels, seven fewer quarters than dimes, and one 50-cent coin. The total value of his coins is $6.40. How many quarters and how many dimes does he have?
