Math Mammoth Metric Measuring covers measurement related topics over the span of five grades (grades 1-5). The lessons for this book have been compiled from Math Mammoth Complete Curriculum, grades 1-5, and are presented here as a single book that only deals with metric units.
The PDF version of this book is enabled for annotation. This means that if you prefer, the student can fill it in on the computer, using the typewriter and drawing tools in Adobe Reader version 9 or greater.
The lessons cover metric length, weight, and volume, temperature in the Celsius scale, the 24-hour clock, elapsed time, and conversions within the metric system. The bulk of the lessons are for grades 2-4.
Math Mammoth Metric Measuring contains both explanations of the concepts and the exercises, and is thus termed a worktext. It requires very little teacher preparation in general; however in several lessons you will need to gather measuring equipment beforehand, such as a ruler, a scale, or measuring cups.
This book is not organized by grade levels nor with increasing difficulty. Instead, the lessons are grouped by topic. The first lessons in each section typically have hands-on exercises where the student uses suitable measuring equipment, and the last lessons in each section include problems about conversions between the units.
Length: The first eight lessons deal with measuring length, in increasing difficulty. The very first lessons only deal with centimeters and millimeters. Then there are lessons that also include meters and kilometers. Lastly, all common metric units for length are dealt with.
Weight: In the first lesson of this section, children use the bathroom scale to weigh objects in kilograms. Next they will learn about grams also, using a kitchen scale to weigh things in grams. The last lesson focuses on conversions, calculations, and word problems.
Volume: The first lesson include many hands-on activities so that the student gets first-hand experience in measuring. The second lesson focuses more on conversions and word problems.
Metric System: These lessons are meant for 5th grade. Students learn the basics of the metric system with the prefixes of the various units, and how to convert between the units.
Temperature: These lessons deal with temperature in Celsius degrees, how to read a thermometer, and temperature line graphs.
Time: These lessons don't teach how to tell time or read the clock (that is found in the book Math Mammoth Clock). Instead, the focus is on conversions between various units of time, the 24-hour clock, and calculating elapsed time.
When it comes to measuring, experience is the best teacher. We all use various measuring units in our everyday life, and using them is the key to remembering what they are and how to convert from one unit to another. The units your child is not using are likely to be forgotten easily. So encourage your students to have free "play time" with measuring devices such as scales, measuring cups, measuring tapes, rulers, and thermometers.
