Math Mammoth Kindergarten Curriculum is a complete math program for kindergarten, providing you with everything you need to teach kindergarten math. It is available both as a download version and as printed copies.

At the heart of the curriculum are two student worktexts (A and B), each covering about half a year of math work. These worktexts contain all the instruction, activities, exercises, and game instructions in the same book. Many of the lessons include activities that teach concepts, and those are explained right in the student books.

Some lessons include an explanation of the concept in a blue box. You, as the parent/teacher, need to explain the concept to the child(ren), using the blue teaching box as a guide. And then, almost all of the lessons contain some exercises for the child to do in the book.

Each chapter introduction has some notes for the teacher/parent, explaining the basic topics and goals for the chapter. The introduction also includes a pacing guide, and many games — both online and offline games — that will help children practice the necessary math skills and concepts. The offline games include downloadable board games, and games with number cards, dice, and dominoes.

You will also get a versatile worksheet maker (Internet access required) to make extra worksheets for many of the topics in the curriculum.

Features

• Math Mammoth focuses on conceptual understanding. It explains the "WHY", so your children can understand the math, not just learn "HOW" to do it.
• In kindergarten, you will often use an activity with physical objects or manipulatives explain a concept. The worktexts will also use a lot of visual models.
• The curriculum is overall mastery-oriented, with some spiral practice here and there, and some mixed review lessons. The kindergarten worktexts contain a total of eight chapters, and most of them deal with two major topics (e.g. addition and measurement).
• The curriculum has no separate teacher's manual nor is it scripted. The introduction to each chapter has notes for the teacher concerning the material in the chapter. All the instruction is found in the lessons themselves, in the worktext.
• After each chapter introduction, you will find a list of games plus a list of Internet links and resources (games, quizzes, animations, etc.) that can be used for fun, illustrations, and further practice.

Overview of topics

The main areas of study in kindergarten math are:

1. Basic counting skills within 0-100.
2. Addition and subtraction within 0-10, including word problems.
3. Identifying, describing, analyzing, and composing basic shapes.

Additional topics covered are sorting objects, comparing quantities and numbers, some foundations for measurement, position words, ordinal numbers, and counting coins, the last one being an optional topic.

The kindergarten workbook A covers counting and writing numbers (chapter 1); groups, comparing, and sorting (chapter 2); addition and measurement (chapter 3); and subtraction (chapter 4). The worktext B covers basic shapes & measurement (chapter 5); the teen numbers and the counting sequence to 100 & money (chapter 6); position words, ordinal numbers, and more on shapes (chapter 7); and more addition and subtraction (chapter 8).

Differences between Math Mammoth Kindergarten and the other levels

The kindergarten level differs from the other levels of Math Mammoth in several points. Overall, it is a simpler setup. I want to encourage you to interact with your child or students as you do various activities together, and not rely so much on written work.

• One difference is, it is not expected that the child read the instructions or work independently very much. This level is meant to be teacher or parent-led.
• The kindergarten curriculum is overall mastery-based, but it is slightly more spiral than the other grade levels of Math Mammoth, because most chapters deal with two major topics instead of one.
• This level uses many more manipulatives than the other levels. See the manipulatives list later on this page, or in the user guide.

• The K level does not come with chapter tests like the other levels. The worktext B does include an end-of-year test at the end of the book, but there are no other tests.

  I feel that testing is not necessary in kindergarten, as it can so easily lead to math anxiety and to viewing mathematics as a subject where correct answers are what matters most. You can learn to assess your student(s) over the course of the year by observing them. This is even easier when you will be doing many activities with them that teach math concepts. You will be able to see where your child struggles and where they excel. You can even base a grade solely on your observations (if you need to give a grade). Or, you can use the chapter reviews as part of the grade.

• The K level also does not provide separate, additional cumulative review lessons like the other levels of Math Mammoth. The two student books do contain several mixed review lessons which practice concepts and skills from earlier chapters. They allow you to spot areas that the student has not grasped well or has forgotten.

  When you find such a topic or concept, I suggest you check if the worksheet maker allows you to make worksheets for that topic, and then also, check for games and resources in the Introduction of the particular chapter in which this topic was taught.

• As of this writing (July 2026), we are not including an answer key with the curriculum, since most people would not need it or buy it. If there is lots of demand, we will make one. For now, if some problem stumps you, feel free to contact us for the answer.
• There are no videos to accompany the lessons, as there are for the other levels. The reason is two-fold: it takes a lot of time to produce videos, and secondly, I would rather you, as the teacher, spend time with the child (or students), than to put the child in front of a screen to watch a video.

FAQ

1. Is this an open-and-go curriculum?

   Not fully. You, as the parent or teacher, will need to teach the child, using the blue teaching boxes and through activities listed in the worktexts. However, many of the lessons do have a section of "seat work" or bookwork for the child to complete fairly independently (if they can).

2. How can I evaluate the child if there are no tests?

   You can learn to assess your child or student(s) over the course of the year by observing them, as you do activities and games together, and as you check their bookwork. You will be able to see where your child struggles and where they excel. You can even base a grade solely on your observations (IF you need to give a grade). Or, you can use the chapter reviews as part of the grade.

   The curriculum does include an end-of-year test which you can use for evaluation, also.

3. What do I do if my child needs more practice?

   Check if the worksheet maker allows you to make worksheets for that topic. Also, use the games and resources in the Introduction of the particular chapter in which the topic was taught.

4. How many lessons are there?

   The worktext A has 79 lessons. The worktext B has 64 lessons, plus it contains an end-of-year test which may take several days for a child to finish.
